Climate x Health
Beyond direct impacts like heatwaves, erratic monsoons, and flooding, climate change disrupts the fundamental determinants of health, significantly increasing both mortality and morbidity. In India, the effects of climate change are already starkly evident, with a rise in extreme weather events and unpredictable climatic patterns. Urban areas, while being major contributors to climate change, are also among the most vulnerable to its impact, facing heightened risks from climate-related hazards.
Despite the growing body of evidence linking climate change to human health, there remains a critical gap in translating this knowledge into actionable strategies to build climate-resilient health systems. Decision-makers and health officials are increasingly aware of these linkages, yet, they often lack the necessary tools and frameworks to mitigate health risks effectively. Bridging this gap is essential to equip communities and systems to adapt and thrive in the face of climate change.
How We Operate
Strengthening preparedness levels of city systems to minimise the impact of climate change on human health
Working with urban poor and vulnerable communities to bolster climate adaptation measures
Our Work
Our efforts at the intersection of climate and health focus on the following:
01.
Climate x Health Knowledge & Data: Examining and integrating existing datasets to draw causal linkages, study disease patterns, bridge knowledge gaps and promote data driven decision making
02.
Information and Awareness: City officials and urban citizens, especially the poor and marginalised, on climate change and its health impact
03.
Health System Preparedness: Working with health officials and frontline health workers to identify Climate x Health vulnerabilities; and develop hyperlocal strategies to protect those who are adversely affected due to climate change
04.
Community Adaptation Measures: Engaging with urban poor and vulnerable communities to develop community-level Climate x Health adaptation plans and build community resilience
